Ribamar - off roading with a caravan

Our next stop was Ribamar camping. The campsite is situated in the Serra d'Irta national park, literally in the national park. You have to drive about a mile down a very rough track to the site which is situated right on the coast, below the mountains  in pine forest. The national park stretches for about 12 miles along the coast between Alcossabere and Peniscola (Yep Helen found Peniscola hilarious😂).

We stayed at the site for 29/12 to 14/1, 16 nights. The site is fairly small and it was a bit of a challenge to get Bill Bailey (the caravan) on to the pitch. We ended up using the motor movers all the way. There is a restaurant on site which supplied fresh bread in the mornings and specialised in local pork.  It became apparent the woods around the site are full of wild boar  and in the mornings you could see where they had been digging right up against the campsite wall.  I think some of them ended up on the restaurant menu. I did hear the boar attacking a waste bin whilst taking the dogs for their last night-time walk. We turned tail before we saw them, or they saw us!

Out the bottom of the site was gate which led straight down to the shore which was a mix of rocky headlands and little beaches. The vegetation was like someone had planted a tropical garden. The place is absolutely beautiful. The walking & cycling is not for the faint heated as the paths are very rocky.

If you have the right type of vehicle you can drive on the main tracks in the national park. We took Big O all the way through the park to Peniscola, about 18 km off road, stopping at a big beach half way. The track up to an ancient tower with double switch backs and no passing places was interesting😓

We think Peniscola was the busiest resort we've been to so far. We had a walk along the prom as Helen wanted to take a photo of the town sign for some reason.

Not sure why she wanted me to stand in front of the sign👀

We found a nice scheduled beach on a little circular walk located 10 minutes drive off road into the park from the campsite. One one visit we were lucky to see a huge pod of dolphins just off shore, wow.

In the hills above the site is Hermitage of Saint Lucia and Saint Benedict . This is well worth a visit. Again the road up is not for the fainthearted but the views are worth it.

Alcossabere  is a nice small town with some good beaches and a scattering for restaurants. We didn't get a chance to try any but did have a nice meal in the site restaurant.

Ribamar is a fantastic place and we will be back. It was not a bad place to see in the new year.

Next stop La Manga.
